East Dallas: A Foodie’s Playground

Diversity and sophistication abounds in Dallas-Fort Worth, and there are hundreds of restaurants to prove it. Among its many cultural hotspots and culinary scenes, East Dallas has emerged as a foodie haven.

The East Dallas Food Scene

While many outsiders might mistakenly think that the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex offers a homogeneous food scene of barbecue and Tex-Mex, many locals and visitors know otherwise. Like any metropolitan city with millions of people, diversity and sophistication abounds in Dallas-Fort Worth, and there are hundreds of restaurants to prove it. Among its many cultural hotspots and culinary scenes, East Dallas has emerged as a foodie haven. Consisting of neighborhoods such as Lakewood and Forest Hills and areas that surround White Rock Lake, this community hosts some of the finest restaurants in the area. Here, you’ll find a multitude of cuisines, including an abundance of food trucks and quality fast food.

Fine and Casual Dining

As a largely residential area, chefs and restaurateurs have flocked to East Dallas to provide quality food for locals. Cafés and eateries line the streets where East Dallas and Downtown merge. This section of the city is also home to a unique and thriving culinary scene that’s emerged on and around Peavy Road, marked by casual dining joints and trendy upscale full-service restaurants. For example, the 20 Feet Seafood Joint, owned by well-known chefs Marc Cassel and Suzan Fries, brings New England cuisine to the Dallas area. Boasting a menu with fish and chips and clam chowder, this eatery has become a crowd favorite. Other restaurants on Peavy Road and the neighboring streets offer French, Latin, Asian, and Mediterranean fare, along with neighborhood-style bars serving contemporary pub food.

Rise of the Food Trucks

As in many cities throughout the US, food trucks have become increasingly popular in DFW — especially in East Dallas. As an easy way to grab a meal or a snack on the go, food trucks offer convenience and specialty foods — everything from traditional Neapolitan pizza to street tacos — to bustling areas and business plazas throughout the city. Primarily serving East Dallas, Trailercakes peddles cupcakes and other confectionery delights like cakeballs, available in such cheekily named flavors as Caramel Eileen (salted caramel) and The King (peanut butter and banana). A popular staple at Klyde Warren Park, Trailercakes was voted one of the best food trucks in 2013. In fact, many food trucks appear along Klyde Warren Park on a weekly basis, so much so that the park has earned a reputation as an ideal place to enjoy diverse snacks and meals in a green, beautiful setting.
