Finding Homes for Home’s Best Friend

With more than 20,000 dogs already adopted, Coldwell Banker continues its Home For Dogs Project

Nothing compares to the warmth and comfort of being at home. But for many dogs across America, this feeling is foreign.

According to The Humane Society, between six and eight million dogs and cats enter shelters each year. Plus, almost three million healthy shelter pets are not adopted annually, and only about 30 percent of pets in homes come from shelters or rescues.

These sobering facts are what served as the inspiration the Coldwell Banker Homes for Dogs Project. After more than 100 years of helping people find homes, the real estate company extended its mission to man’s best friend with its “Homes for Dogs Project.” By partnering with Adopt-a-Pet.com, North America’s largest non-profit pet adoption website, the Coldwell Banker network has helped to find more than 20,000 dogs their furever homes.

To increase awareness of the effort, Coldwell Banker has focused its latest advertising campaign called “Old Dog New Dog” to capture the heartfelt story of an agent giving back to her community by helping shelter animals find homes through the “Homes for Dogs Project.”

The commercial features rescue dogs, such as Max, who was adopted in 2014 after being spotted on Adopt-a-Pet.com. Before he was put up for adoption, Max was picked up as a stray and delivered to a “high kill” shelter in San Bernadino, CA. The shelter only keeps dogs for five days before it puts them down, and after Max had been at the shelter for four days, a worker reached out to The Dexter Foundation, a local non-profit dog rescue and adoption agency, which quickly rescued Max and found temporary foster care for him.

“I found him on Adopt-a-Pet.com as I was looking for a dog to rescue of that sort of breed and age,” said Kelly Saffrey, Max’s current parent. “As soon as I saw his picture, I just knew he was the pet for me.”

Adopt-a-Pet.com currently has more than 15,000 shelters and rescues in its network, and it is thrilled to be partnering with Coldwell Banker.

“We share Coldwell Banker’s view that nothing turns a house into a home more quickly than the addition of a loving pet,” said Abbie Moore, executive director of Adopt-a-Pet.com. “And we are so inspired by the desire of Coldwell Banker to launch this amazing program.”

Dear Mr. Marine – I’m a volunteer with a humane shelter my grandfather helped establish in 1959. It is struggling daily, because we serve a large area, and provide a lot of services. I’m not on “social media”, and I would very much appreciate a dialogue with you. Would you email me? Thank you so much!!

Good evening! My name is Gerin Hennebaul and I am a third-grade teacher in Lawrenceville Georgia. My students are about to begin working on a service project where we will be making “adoption bags” for people who adopt dogs from our local animal shelter. The bags will contain homemade blankets, dog toys, treats, a thank you letter “from the dog” and the kids are also going to be painting artwork to hang in our animal shelter to sell. All donations will go to the animal shelter. I’m reaching out because I didn’t know if there was anything you guys could do to help out in terms of maybe being a guest speaker or any sort of donation. If there’s anyway you can email me back at the above address that would be wonderful!

You only seem to care about dogs, but there are many more cats in shelters thar nend good loving homes too. PLEASE think about all the poor unloved cats and kittens that will be euthanized if they don’t find homes. I agree that dogs need homes too. but as I said before there are twice or even three times more cats that Ned homes too. Thank u on for listening to me

Hi June, Thank you for your comment. While the program is called “Homes for Dogs” because the original ad featured only pups, our friends at Adopt-a-Pet.com work tirelessly to help all kinds of adoptable animals find homes, including cats. And we featured cats in two recent campaigns as well. You can see them here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeMteN9Ivcw & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT20SlapZws

Hi Ellen, Thank you so much for your comment. We work with Adopt-a-Pet.com for the Homes for Dogs Project. I would encourage you to check on adoptapet.com to see if the shelter you volunteer at is already part of their network. We’d also encourage you to reach out to your local Coldwell Banker brokerage and see if there’s any way you can work together!

I am a volunteer with the Dona Ana County Humane Society in Las Cruces, NM and am interested in fining out if your program has funds for Grants? We have a program called Pets for Seniors that encourages Senior Cotizens to adopt from our local shelter by offering them a reduction in fees and we pay the shelter for the reduction so they can continue their wornderful work. We are always looking for new sources of funding to continue the support of this program.
Is there any opportunity for help. I am not sure if someone from our organization has already contacted you, but if not, could you please forward to me any information that may be of help to us?
Thanking you in advance for your kind attention, Lori English

I have been trying desperately to adopt a young dog after our beloved furbaby died 2 months ago from kidney failure. He was a Bichon frise only 9 years old. I have put in several applications which have been accepted but never heard b as c from them. It is nerve wracking waiting and waiting. Also, do you know of a company that would help with costs to fence in an area for the dog. The dog would be kept inside but some agencies ask if you have a fenced yard. Thank you, Rose
