The 2012 Emmy Nominations were announced last week and Mad Men, the four-time best drama series winner, took top honors with 17 nominations in total; one for each month the cult hit was off the air due to contract disputes. While we think the 17 nominations were more than well deserved, if we had it our way, they’d also be up for “Outstanding Home in a Drama Series” as well.

From sprawling Californian estates (that we’ve listed), to iconic Long Island homes that personify the “American Dream”, Mad Men fans have been treated to some mighty fine real estate to gawk at over the years. The 5th season scene stealing home that nabs the nomination this year, is Don Draper’s new penthouse situated on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

The newly married Don Draper trades in his old dreary digs in the West Village for this penthouse in a six year old high rise. Contrary to the decor and architecture of the time, Draper’s new penthouse features a stunning wide open floor plan that mirrors the new open and less secretive life that he now leads as a newlywed. The chic pad is highlighted by a “white-carpeted sunken living room and a fascinating fireplace and a Case Study-style kitchen with two pass through windows.”

This is no ordinary cramped Manhattan apartment. The kitchen is sizable and is punctuated by appliances that sport a bright pop of color, there’s a separate dining room with a fine solid wood table and chairs. Furniture with clean lines, art and shag carpeting give the penthouse a real “homey” but modern feeling as well. As evidenced by the surprise birthday party Meghan throws Don, the home is perfect for entertaining and can fit a band and your entire office in it comfortably.

Even in a large penthouse, living in the city can feel restrictive if you don’t have some outdoor space you can walk out on to enjoy the crisp air and lovely views. So for me, what takes Don Draper’s pad over the top is the expansive outdoor patio space that come with multi-million dollar views of Central Park and Manhattan’s skyline.
