Church Turned Home

I love my home. It’s close to work, family and not too far from New York City. It’s where I have dinner with my family, attempt to tackle home improvement projects and relax on the weekends (although with a 1 month old that rarely happens).

However, I’m always amazed by very unique homes – the ones in which it’s hard to believe someone actually lives there!

Coldwell Banker recently helped Forbes with an article on “Strange Homes for Sale,” and we reached out to our network to find the most unusual, notorious homes on the market right now.  Below are a few that really stood out. Take a look – you’ll be impressed!

  • Schweppe Family Estate: Steeped in Chicago history, this estate once hosted famous guests like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the former of whom danced on the terrace at the rear of the house, overlooking Lake Michigan. Its current state follows a multi-million dollar renovation in the 1980s. Lake Forest College archivist Art Miller tours this historic property.
  • The Buck Estate: Designed by noted architect Albert Farr and modeled after Hampton Court in Middlesex, England, a 16th century royal family residence. Over 17,000 square feet, it features ornate plaster details, beautiful rooms of original carved wood paneling.

  • 1 Grove Court: Steel and glass architecture by award winning architect Tobin Dougherty in central Portola Valley. Set on a totally private knoll, this home has views in all directions. It also has room for formal entertaining, casual living, smart house technologies, a large cinema screen theater, wine cellar and pool.
  • Mansion in Park City, UT: This amazing home designed by architect Mike Upwall has been featured on MTV’s Cribs and on the covers of numerous magazines.
  • Church Turned Home: This former St. Johns United Methodist Church was transformed into a breathtaking, one of a kind single-family residence unlike any in Dallas.  It boasts 11 bedrooms, 11.5 baths, high ceilings and stained glass. The former altar is now a granite and stainless kitchen and the choir loft has been wired for a theatre area.

  • Original home to Cuban Sugar King: This is a classic, elegant, one of a kind estate. It has impeccable grounds, all tile saline pool, outdoor tub and shower and dockage for two large boats. It even has an elevator!

  • Great Gatsby Inspiration: The nine-building waterfront property at the tip of Long Island’s Kings Point peninsula is its own private oasis. The main house was built in 1850 by John Alsop King Jr., son of a New York governor and namesake of Kings Point. Featuring nine bedrooms and five baths, the stucco home is one of the last untouched mansions on Long Island’s North Shore. Believed by some to be the inspiration for the mansion at the center of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, its mid-nineteenth century architecture and 1930s ornamentation solidify its placement as a true Gold Coast gem.
  • Greenville Castle: This home for sale is an 107-year-old castle situated on 30 acres, (additional acreage, stables, pasture available) on the south face of Paris Mountain, just a 10 minute drive from downtown Greenville. Built for a German baroness and modeled after a castle on the Rhine, it has remained in the same family since 1920.

I like all of them but my favorite is the Grove Court home. I love the contemporary / modern look.
