So many doughnuts, so little time. If you’re looking for doughnut shops that surpass what you’ll get at the local chain shop, New York City is a great place to be. There are many, many options for artisanal, creatively flavored doughnuts crafted from top-quality ingredients in the city. Here are a few of the best options when you need to get your fried dough fix in NYC.

Orwasher’s Bakery

Orwasher’s Bakery is an Upper East Side institution that’s been in business for nearly 100 years. The bakery serves fresh loaves of bread, amazing black-and-white cookies, and best of all, fresh, delicious jelly doughnuts. The coolest part is that the doughnuts are piped-to-order, filled with fruity jam while you stand and watch. It doesn’t get much more fresh than that! These doughnuts taste vastly different from chain-store jelly doughnuts. You can really taste the difference that quality ingredients make here. Orwasher’s, having been in business for so long, is a neighborhood staple on the Upper East Side. Living in the big city, you don’t often find a spot that has such a welcoming feel, but Orwasher’s is a real throwback and a great piece of history in the area.

The Doughnuttery

The Doughnuttery is a unique little spot in Chelsea Market serving up bite-sized doughnuts that get fried on a conveyor belt right before your eyes! The mini doughnuts are then coated in creatively flavored sugar combinations, such as Flower Power (hibiscus, honey, rose petals) and Paris Time (lavender, pistachio, vanilla). When you get your bag of doughnuts they’re hot and fresh right off the conveyor belt — lending a freshness and flavor that simply can’t be replicated. Chelsea Market is a bustling hub of great eateries, and The Doughnuttery is just one of them! The market is loaded with great places to grab a bite no matter what you’re in the mood for, making the neighborhood an excellent place for foodies.

Doughnut Plant

Doughnut Plant is arguably one of the best doughnut shops in NYC. The shop uses the highest-quality ingredients to create doughnuts in creative, delicious, and entirely unique flavors such as Tres Leche, Creme Brulee, Oatmeal, and many more. In addition to their daily flavors, which come as either cake doughnuts or more airy yeast doughnuts, they offer a rotating selection of seasonal specials such as Rose Petal for Valentine’s Day and King Cake for Mardi Gras. They have filled doughnuts featured housemade jellies, and all of their creations are made sans preservatives, trans fats, and anything artificial. Doughnut Plant’s original location is on the Lower East Side, but they have another store in Midtown West. The area isn’t exactly known for its food scene, but Doughnut Plant is a real gem in the area!

Dough

Dough recently opened up its first location in New York City proper after launching and prospering in Brooklyn, and the Flatiron location is always bustling — a testament to Dough’s chewy, doughy, and uniquely flavored doughnuts. Everything is made in small batches, so you’re guaranteed a fresh snack no matter the time of day. They have Hibiscus, a doughnut draped in vibrant pink frosting; Dulce de Leche, featuring sliced almonds atop a golden frosting; simple Cinnamon Sugar (a classic); and many more. The Flatiron neighborhood is a hub of great food and shopping, and Dough is just the latest addition to the bustling area. After picking up a doughnut at Dough, you can always stroll over to Madison Square Park and take a walk while you eat and admire their latest art installation. It’s a great area and Dough only makes it better!
