Home of the Week: An 8,000 Square Foot Mansion on Astor Street

Take a tour through this historic 19th century mansion located in one of Chicago’s most exclusive neighborhoods.

In our newest ‘Home of the Week‘ we move from an impressive estate in Oak Brook to an 8,000 square foot mansion in Chicago that was built in 1898.

Famous American businessman Potter Palmer commissioned this Chicago treasure nearly 120 years ago. The $7.2 million dollar home may have been built in the 19th century, but it sports a completely new 8,000 square foot interior envisioned by renowned architect Michael Graham. The new interior boasts the finest 21st century finishes and features, which plays perfectly with the character and charm of its grey limestone facade.

The four bedroom home is the picture of urban opulence, with its soaring ceilings, intricately carved moldings, fireplaces and elevator. Given the sheer size and scale of this historic home, it is almost hard to believe that something so large and sprawling can be so ideally located in the middle of one of America’s most thriving and vibrant cities.

The neighborhood is every bit as wonderful as the home is. The Astor Street District located in central Chicago was built up over the period of more than 60 years and features 19th century houses “designed in a variety of historical revival styles, and are interspersed with apartment buildings and townhouses. It was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1975.”
