3 Neighborhoods with Great Museums in NYC

The museums in NYC are some of the best things the city has to offer. They’re a fantastic way to experience culture and beauty, while learning something new. Visit the Upper East Side, the Upper West side, or Midtown to find these wonderful museums.

The museums in NYC are among the best things the city has to offer. There’s no better way to escape winter snow and sticky summer heat than to spend the day perusing the rich history and incredible works of art on display. Wander through at your own speed, hire a guide, or take an audio tour using headsets many museums provide. If you’re looking for museums in NYC, there are three neighborhoods you can count on: the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side, and Midtown.

Upper East Side

This area is chock-full of world-famous museums. There’s the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue and 82nd Street, the Gugghenheim on Fifth Avenue and 89th Street, and The Frick Collection on Fifth Avenue and 71st Street, to name a few.

If you have a whole day free to really explore, head to the Met — the museum houses a vast collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture, and much more. Don’t miss the Met’s annual Costume Institute exhibition: Held every spring from May to August, this showcase of amazing accessories and clothing offers a unique mixture of fashion and art. One more must-do at the Met? A visit to their rooftop, which affords fantastic views of the city in all directions. Visitors can grab a refreshing beverage and get a little fresh air, all while drinking in the lovely view over the treetops of Central Park.

The Guggenheim building itself (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) is an architectural sight to behold, to say nothing of the wonderful works of art housed within. Originally established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, this museum’s massive collection includes contemporary pieces, sculptures, and amazing photographic works.

Then there’s the Frick, a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle. The Frick Collection is small and manageable, and interesting in that it is the personal collection of art lover and industrialist Henry Clay Frick. It’s a truly wonderful experience to see these pieces displayed very closely to the way they were during the life of Frick himself. The mansion itself is amazing, with a gorgeous courtyard and fountain in the center where sunlight pours in through the windowed ceiling. It all feels straight out of Old World New York — because it is!

Upper West Side

The Upper West Side is another neighborhood to visit if you’re looking for museums in NYC. This is where you’ll find the amazement and wonder that is the American Museum of Natural History on Central Park West and 79th Street. This is a stellar place to take anyone who loves science. It’s an enchanting experience, equal parts educational and entertaining.

Midtown

One more place to find a great museums in NYC would be Midtown, where the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is situated on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Here, patrons will find works by the likes of Van Gogh, Picasso, and Warhol, along with film screenings, unique exhibitions, and a lovely Sculpture Garden where one can relax and enjoy some fresh air along with the art.

Manhattan has no shortage of things to do, and the museums are right up top on the list of must-see attractions. Visitors can spend a few hours or a whole day soaking in the beauty, the history, and the culture of the many wonderful works of art available for viewing in NYC.
