Manayunk, one of Philadelphia’s most popular neighborhoods, was reputedly named after a Native American word “manaiung,” which means “where we go to drink.” Given the amount of bars and restaurants along the neighborhood’s Main Street, the name’s still quite applicable today. In addition to the famous Manayunk nightlife, this section of the city offers many other attractions that draw a constant influx of residents and visitors each year.

The small neighborhood of Manayunk is conveniently located approximately 15 minutes from downtown Philly, along the Manayunk Canal. Named a historic district in 1983, Manayunk combines Old World architecture and a modern vibe to form one of the city’s most popular residential communities. Median home prices and average rents in Manayunk are significantly less than Center City neighborhoods like Washington Square West, which increases the area’s appeal. Like many city neighborhoods, parking is a challenge, but paid lots are available.

Shopoholics love Manayunk, and for good reason. Main Street is packed with unique small businesses, including art galleries, jewelry stores, and shops featuring home décor and furniture. Apparel stores range from high-end boutiques such as Nicole Miller to shops like Greene Street, where recycled bargains abound.

Pet-Friendly, Walkable Neighborhood

The Manayunk Pretzel Park and dog park is a canine owner’s paradise. Another popular outdoor spot is the Towpath running along the canal. For those who love a fitness challenge, the area is also famous for its hills — including the steep Manayunk Wall, known to intimidate cyclists competing in the city’s annual Philly Cycling Classic. These hills, difficult to navigate in ice and snow, provide a great workout for weekend warriors.
