Plants add new life to your home, making it look, feel, and smell fresh. Houseplants also add oxygen to your home and some have been known to reduce toxic chemicals in the air. That’s definitely beneficial in an urban metropolis like Philadelphia where the air quality can sometimes be affected by industrial areas and general city pollution. Consider these creative ideas for decorating with plants in your new Philly home.

All the Colors — Flower Room

If you’re the type of person who likes to live a colorful and exciting life, let the plant life in one special room of your home reflect that part of your personality. Choose flowering plants that bloom in a wide range of colors, from red roses to purple African violets to white Jasmines to yellow begonias. Use the standard green houseplant, like a fern, to act as a basis for the colorful display — like you would see in an arranged bouquet of flowers. Your guests will love your beautiful “flower room.”

A “Decorative” Aroma

If you have a room in your home that tends to be plagued with unpleasant odors, whether it’s a bathroom or a pantry where you keep a litter box, decorate it with houseplants that give off a pleasant scent. Options include the Arabian Jasmine flower, citrus plants, and tea rose begonias. If you have pets, make sure that the plants you choose are non-toxic to animals and take special precautions to keep your houseplants elevated or hanging from the ceiling.

An Exotic Garden Wall in Your Office

When you’re in an urban location like Philly, any exotic plant life other than weeds or grass is a welcome sight — especially if you’re a creative, nature-centered type of person. So dedicate one wall in your home office or study to exotic or tropical plant life that isn’t common on the East Coast. One plant idea is the Bird of Paradise flower that’s native to South Africa. Orchids are also warm-weather flowers that require a lot of care. You can even add a bit of Southwestern influence to your home by growing a small green cactus. Go to the annual Philadelphia Flower Show for more inspirations. If you decide on exotic plants, make sure that the wall you choose has access to plenty of natural sunlight and warm air. Attractive wall planters are now available that allow you to easily arrange your plants on a common wall for decoration (also called “vertical gardens”).
