Decorating on a Budget with Online Designers

These days, you can get almost anything online, and interior design is no exception. Online interior design services are vastly more affordable than traditional interior designers, perfect for those decorating on a budget. Here are three great options.

If you’re decorating on a budget, as many are, hiring an interior designer is probably out of the question. Designers do amazing work, but they can be prohibitively expensive. What is one to do? Try an online design firm! These days, you can get almost anything online, and interior design is no exception. Online interior design services are vastly more affordable than traditional interior designers. Here are the top three options:

Havenly

With Havenly, you choose a designer from their roster and work with them online to design your room. You can do a small room “refresh,” which starts at $79, or a full room design starting at $199 per room. It starts with filling out a design questionnaire so your designer can get a sense of your needs and preferences for the space. They then work closely with you, taking into account your budget, style preferences, and inspiration for the space. Your designer will send you two different ideas for the room (when you do the full room package), and you can choose which you like best, then request revisions and offer feedback. Havenly will even take care of ordering and arranging shipping for items you choose to purchase, making this a great option for busy people decorating on a budget.

Homepolish

Homepolish works differently from Havenly in that you hire the designer by the hour. You can buy a single day session ($349/3 hours) or book a longer package for $130/hour, which requires a minimum of 10 hours. You can get help with anything on Homepolish — paint palette questions, gallery wall help, furniture layout . . . the list goes on. Homepolish has a team of over 450 designers. You can meet in person if your locations align, or work via video chat. Homepolish has received high praise from Design Sponge and Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP.

Decorist

Decorist’s process is similar to that of Havenly. You enter information about what you’re looking for and what room you’re looking to decorate, you choose a designer (or they can match you with one), and then you upload photos and work with your designer to come up with a room scheme you love. The designer will send you two room concepts and Decorist will order your new items for you, if you choose that complimentary option. Decorist offers three pricing tiers: $199/room for “Classic,” $499/room for “Elite” (which is a designer with five or more years of experience), and $799/room to work with a published designer. You can work with India Hicks, Celerie Kemble, Rachel Ashwell, and other big names in the industry while still decorating on a budget — a very cool concept that really sets Decorist apart.

Decorating a room can be a daunting task, especially when you have a plethora of design ideas and don’t know which one to choose. I love the idea of hiring an interior designer online. I have heard nothing but good things about the Havenly program.
