Entryway storage for the New York City home is important as a necessary place to keep outerwear for the colder and nastier weather of the winter months. One wants a location to neatly store boots and shoes as you and your guests enter, to keep from traipsing the wet outdoor mess through your apartment. With some thoughtful decorating tips, anyone can create some much-needed entryway storage.

Storage Area to Fit Space

As many NYC homes can be limited on space, it is important to choose your decor for your entry type. Are you entering a glorious foyer with plenty of square footage or a humble living space that doubles as your living room? The smaller Big Apple abode allows for creativity when it comes to decorating for a storage entry area.

Creating an Entry with Storage

When the front door leads directly into the main room of the apartment, it is a must to use creativity in fashioning an entry area. While planning your room decor, it is important to not have furnishings, such as seating, directly facing the door as it opens. You will want to create a space within your space to delegate as your entryway.

Tip 1: Use a decorative screen placed next to the door to create the sense of a separate entryway. A small bookcase to hold footwear, gloves, and hats can be placed in front of the screen as if it were a wall. Instead, or in addition to the screen, you can place a standing coat rack to serve as a temporary home for outdoor gear.

Tip 2: Depending on your floorplan, you may want to place a sofa vertical to the door with the back of the sofa facing the entry. Place a low storage credenza or bookcase behind the sofa to create an entry foyer. The credenza is a perfect place to store footwear as well as gloves, scarves, and hats.

Tip 3: Need to plan for a smaller space? Then simply place a small credenza on the wall next to where you enter the abode. Above the storage unit hang a decorative coat rack on the wall. The top of the credenza serves as a perfect place to drop keys and bags.

Prepare for Visitors

When asking people to remove their boots and shoes it is a nice gesture to have options for them to slip their tootsies into. Leave a basket by the door with fresh socks in several sizes to offer to guests. When your guest leaves, you can give them the socks as a nice homey parting gift. If you choose to offer slippers instead, make sure you have small, medium, and large in a rubber slide on that you can disinfect between each guest.
