How a Father Built a Home With Only His Hands

By the title, you might imagine that I am about to tell you about the hard laboring, weathered hands of the man I call Daddy. You’re right. My father earned a living with his hands but not as a carpenter or builder, as you may think. He was, and still is to this day, a professional musician, singer and songwriter. He provided for our family by touring the east coast playing everywhere from fancy venues to seedy nightclubs. Music is his life and, in turn, the core of our family.

Mixing Home Culture and the Holidays: Three Kings Day

As a proud Latina born and raised in the United States, I have always made sure that both sides of my heritage—the Latin and the American—are celebrated in my everyday life. My Pandora stations are a mix of Top 40 stations and contemporary Latin music royals, Aventura and Marc Anthony, and you’re more likely to find me at a salsa club on the weekends than you are anywhere else. My Thanksgiving dinners are a mix of the traditional American turkey, stuffing, and gravy combo alongside trays of pastelón de platano and flan. And now, during the end of year holidays, I am even more thankful, because the celebration doesn’t end on January 1st, when the New Year arrives.

From Texas to New York: A New Holiday Home

Five years ago I packed up my life in Texas and moved to the New York City. As my sixth Christmas in the Big Apple nears I can’t help but reflect on what this life changing transition has been like. Many of my Christmas traditions from life in Texas have been carried over to my new life in the city, but this year there is a new tradition that reminds me that home, during the holidays and every other day, is always better when it is filled with those we love.

Truly There is No Place Like Home for the Holidays

The old holiday tune There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays is a classic melody, but to many of us the lyrics are more than just a catchy song. While many associate this holiday classic with Christmas, if you look at the words it’s actually more applicable to Thanksgiving.
