Dallas Music and Dallas-Fort Worth Festivals

While Texas may be known for its famous country musicians, the state also boasts a deep rock-and-roll and blues legacy. Dallas-Fort Worth locals and visitors have an abundance of musical festivals from which to choose each year.

The Dallas music scene is thriving, and Fort Worth boasts many up-and-coming venues for live music lovers. While Texas may be known for its famous country musicians, the state also boasts a deep rock-and-roll and blues legacy. The compatriots of many popular artists over the years, including Buddy Holly, Selena, and Janis Joplin, Texans—especially residents of larger cities such as Dallas and Fort Worth—maintain a strong appreciation for all types of music. Fortunately, Dallas-Fort Worth locals and visitors have an abundance of musical festivals from which to choose each year.

Denton Arts and Jazz Festival

A college town that is home to Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas, Denton rests north of Dallas and Fort Worth. Held in the spring or summer, the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival is a weekend-long event that features live music from a variety of musical genres (especially jazz), street food, and fine arts exhibitions. Each year, thousands of DFW locals and out-of-towners come to Denton to take in everything the festival has to offer. From college-age adults to families to seniors, this outdoor festival has something for everyone. In an effort to bring fine arts and music to all, the event is held free of charge.

Edgefest

Hosted by the Dallas-based radio station 102.1 The Edge, a staple of the Dallas music scene, Edgefest is an annual outdoor music festival that features prominent rock-and-roll bands, local performers, and indie musicians such as Garbage, The Black Keys, Saosin, and Bowling for Soup. With 23 years of annual concerts under its belt, Edgefest hosts a variety of bands at FC Stadium in Frisco, Texas during the spring as a one-day event.

Fort Worth Music Fest

Held in late spring or early summer, Fort Worth Music Fest is a growing musical festival with acts from diverse genres, including country, blues, folk, and indie rock. With a changing lineup each year, locals enjoy listening to dozens of bands on three different stages, with many visitors attending all day long. Visual art exhibitions of sculptures, paintings, three-dimensional displays, and more are a new addition to the Fort Worth Music Fest. Local vendors and restaurant proprietors sell food and beverages. In recent years, gourmet food trucks serving everything from authentic tacos to sliders have climbed in popularity at this music festival.

In addition to the numerous annual music festivals the area has to offer, there are hot spots throughout Dallas-Fort Worth for live music in intimate settings at bars and clubs. Given the numerous larger venues—the American Airlines Center and the Gexa Energy Pavilion, for instance—many popular musicians tour heavily in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
