The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo: Trade Your Winter Shoes for Cowboy Boots

Between John Wayne films and Louis L’amour books, Texas still has a reputation for being the land of cowboys, untamed wildlife, and edge-of-your-seat adventures. The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo has all of this and much, much more.

They say everything is bigger in Texas. This includes our larger than life heroes, wide open plains, and our huge plates of tender, barbeque brisket. Not least on this list is the enormous “Yee-haw!” you’ll shout when you attend your first real life rodeo. Between John Wayne films and Louis L’amour books, Texas still has a reputation for being the land of cowboys, untamed wildlife, and edge-of-your-seat adventures. The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo has all of this and much, much more.

Since the early 1950s this occasion has been a hub for country music, tasty food, prize-winning livestock, and of course, a real life rodeo. In case I still haven’t woken your inner cowboy, here are four reasons I think you and your family should come:

1. It’s Texas and This Is a Rodeo
Among the many Wild West–style experiences people enjoy in Texas, attending a rodeo in the historic city of San Antonio has got to be one of the greatest. Reminiscent of many of the Western films you’ve seen, the riveting competition of a rodeo is even more thrilling than cinema can do it justice.

Come cheer your loudest as you watch competitions in bareback horse riding, steer wrestling, bull riding, and more. Or you can mozie on over to the event that is my personal favorite: the mutton race. This is without a doubt the cutest rodeo event: I’m talkin’ little kids chasing little goats. What more could you need?

2. There’s MusicLots and Lots of Music
Come to the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo ready to hum your favorite country tunes. Over 20 bands will take the stage at San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and I bet you’ll know plenty of the songs. The lineup includes names like Rascal Flatts, Willie Nelson and Family, The Band Perry, For King & Country, and many more. So if your ears long for the sweet sound of live country music, this event could very well be the place for you.

3. Texas FoodNeed I Say More?
Texas cuisine speaks for itself. Between the free tacos at the Cowboy Breakfast that kicks off the whole event on January 27 at the Cowboy Dancehall, to the tasty Texas barbeque cook-off or large powdered funnel cakes you’ll enjoy throughout the event, San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo will have plenty of tasty foods to make every tummy happy.

4. Attractions That Highlight History, Nature, and Good Fun
Texas bares rich history, endemic plants and animals, and a contagious spiritedness inherited from the Wild West. This is the heritage that the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo carries on by remaining a family-centric occasion where the stories of our favorite historical or fictional heroes of the Wild West seem to come alive again just to catch each of us wearing our favorite cowboy hat. Festivities run between February 9th and the 26th and you can learn more at www.sarodeo.com. Yee-haw!
