If you’re tired of looking at the same four walls in every room and desire a decorative refresh, sometimes a small change makes a big difference. Update your color scheme by simply repainting an accent wall to add brightness to a neutral decor. To make an area more relaxed and kid-friendly, try adding chalk wall paint, cork or creating a magnet board for a fun and functional upgrade to your Philadelphia home.

Add a Chalkboard Anywhere

Chalkboard paint can be used on virtually any paintable surface. Using chalk wall paint, transform a room into a space for kids to express their creative and artistic side. If an entire wall of chalkboard paint is too overwhelming, consider covering just the back of a door. Chalkboard paint is available in a variety of colors, so you aren’t limited to black. Paint walls a slate blue or even a bright pink color for a cheerful look. You can also apply chalkboard paint to furniture and craft items. For increased functionality, apply a coat of magnetic primer under the chalkboard paint.

Put Up Cork Board Walls

Tracking your family’s school and sports activities sometimes feels like a second full-time job. As the number of papers in your house increases, try expanding your display space with a cork board wall. A cork wall also works well in a home office or incorporated into a homework station area for kids. To install custom sizes, purchase rolled cork sheets and cut to fit. Prepare the wall by sanding lightly and applying a primer if needed. Attach cork sheets to the wall using contact cement or whatever glue is recommended by the manufacturer.

Create Your Own Dry Erase Board

Dry erase boards are typically seen in classrooms or work settings, but you can also use them at home. If you never have enough space for notes and family updates, paint your own whiteboard directly on an empty wall. Dry erase paint can be applied directly over existing paint, although a primer is recommended when painting over a darker color. Customize your dry erase board to whatever shape and size fits best. And if you have more magnets than refrigerator space, consider adding a magnetic primer to display your kids’ art projects on the painted whiteboard.

If you’ve grown tired of being surrounded by boring, unusable wall space, just a few layers of specialty paint can transform your room into something more functional and fun. For more elaborate wall designs such as faux painting or wall murals, many Philadelphia area painters specialize in custom and textured techniques.
