As a newcomer, moving to a new area can be an exciting adventure: meeting new people, visiting new places, and learning about the hottest things to do around town. At first, many newcomers to the area are curious to learn more about the most popular Louisville neighborhoods.
Whether you’re looking for a short commute to work, something near the best schools, or a place to call home near a local park and great shopping, Louisville is home to a long list of great neighborhoods for everyone.
Here’s a list of five popular Louisville neighborhoods:
1. Highlands
Recognized as one of the oldest neighborhoods in Louisville. The Highlands is a popular and historic neighborhood with a park-like setting and tree-lined streets.
The Highlands neighborhood is within minutes of Downtown Louisville and the popular Cherokee Park. Many residents also enjoy visiting the local shops and restaurants alongside Bardstown Road, originally known as Restaurant Row.
You will see many different styles of homes in the historic Highlands neighborhood, ranging from Colonial, Tudor, Bungalow, as well as a few others.
2. Jeffersontown
Another one of the popular Louisville neighborhoods that has been growing over the years with no signs of slowing down is the Jeffersontown neighborhood. Referred to by most Louisvillians as J’town, the residents here love the small town atmosphere the area has maintained and preserved over the years. With many different music festivals around Louisville, J’town hosts one of the top community festivals in the region. The Gaslight Festival is held on the third weekend of September and draws a crowd of around 100,000 visitors every year.
3. Norton Commons
With the phrase “More life per square foot,” for years Norton Commons has branded itself as the perfect location to call home. This neighborhood is growing at a rapid pace and continues to offer a memorable lifestyle experience to its residents.
With more than 600 residents and over 50 businesses, there is always something to do in the Norton Commons neighborhood. Because of the Builders Guild, which consists of many of the most recognized builders in the area, you will find some beautiful homes here in the neighborhood.
4. Oldham County
One area that deserves to be mentioned is Oldham County, which is located just 25 miles northeast of Louisville and less than 100 miles south of Cincinnati. One major selling point for people moving to the area is the great school system. Oldham County’s award-winning schools have continually been recognized on a national level.
We have continued to see an increase in population and also a growing demand for real estate in Oldham County. Many residents not only love the top-notch schools but also the small town charm and great neighborhoods found here in Oldham County.
5. St. Matthews
One very desirable and popular neighborhood located in the east end of Louisville is St. Matthews. Originally known as Gilman’s Station in the 1800s, the city adopted the name St. Matthews from St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
You will find that many of the homes in St. Matthews were built in the late 1920s and surprisingly enough, by the 1950s, the majority of the real estate in St. Matthews was already developed.
If you are making the move to the Louisville area, you will quickly discover that many of the Louisville neighborhoods mentioned all have something special to offer. This is a relatively small list and you will find that the city of Louisville has many more neighborhoods and communities that may also be a great fit for you as a new resident. Hey Nathan, Louisville is a great city with a multitude of interesting neighborhoods.
I would add Old Louisville, Crescent Hill, and Prospect.
I lived in eclectic and vibrant Cherokee Triangle – one of the many neighborhoods which make up The Highlands.
