Whether you love it or hate it, Valentines Day is almost here. While there are plenty of restaurants in Philadelphia that are offering the traditional prix fixe meals and local florists are getting bouquets of roses ready, there are plenty of other ways to make the holiday truly special this year. Several businesses in Philly have dreamed up creative and unique Valentines Day ideas, so that you can enjoy the holiday in your own special way.
Go on a Cruise (Yes, Really)
Want to use Valentines Day as an excuse to see the city in a new way? Book a dinner-and-dancing cruise on the Spirit of Philadelphia. The Valentines Day weekend cruises offered on the ship include a meal and dancing, plus roses. For an additional fee, you can purchase a bottle of Champagne and a special commemorative flute or a photo package. The cruise route takes you up and down the Delaware River, providing you with a view of the city from the water. Dinner cruises are available on the holiday itself, as well as the night before. If you prefer, you can also book a lunchtime cruise, for a slightly lower price.
Wine and Dine
Perhaps you’d like to stay on dry land, but are still looking for Valentines Day ideas that are a bit more exciting than a basic dinner. One option is to try the Sommelier Challenge Dinner at the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. Taking place on February 11, the theme of the evening is “Pink Wines for Lovers.” During the event, you can enjoy a four-course meal, as well as rose wines chosen by the Restaurant School’s sommeliers. What sets the event apart from other Valentines Day meals is that the sommeliers are competing and want diners to agree that the wine they’ve picked is the one that best goes with the food served. Advanced registration is required for the wine challenge.
Get Creative
Valentines Day can also be a great time to try something new, either with people you love or on your own. Gallery Collective, an art gallery in Northern Liberties, is offering a Valentines Day Paint Night. Instead of putting a napkin on your lap and tucking into a meal, put on a painting smock and get in touch with your creative side. The gallery will provide the paints and other supplies needed and will also be serving a selection of wines, cheese, and desserts. Tickets are $50 per person and should be booked in advance.
Living in Philadelphia means you’re never short of things to do a holiday weekend or at any other time of year. Make this Valentines Day one to remember by trying something different and special in 2015.
