Summer is one of the best seasons of the year to look for things to do in Dallas. Warm temperatures open up the city to a number of event and activity possibilities, especially those that take place outdoors. If you’re considering ways to spend your weekend or vacation, check out these activities when venturing out of your DFW home this summer.

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

Fun is in full bloom at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Activities and exhibits that showcase floral delights abound in the Garden for all to enjoy and, in some cases, frolic through. A village called “Flower Houses: Fairy Tales with a Texas Twist” and a replica of the Rio Grande river are star summertime attractions and are sure to make visitors swell with Texan pride. The Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden and its many galleries provide kids with the opportunity to commune with nature in active and engaging ways.

Perot Museum

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science offers a wealth of opportunities for both adults and children to learn more about the world around them. On August 7, the museum encourages patrons over the age of 21 to dress up in the garb of a preferred decade and sip libations while listening to esteemed scientists and guest speakers lecture on the subject of time. The next day, visitors of all ages can discover the many different ways modes of transportation manifest in live organisms. Patrons can also partake in experiments specially designed to demonstrate movement. August 14 ushers in the chance of a lifetime for patrons who’ve dreamed of sleeping in a museum: visitors can bring sleeping bags to enjoy a night of fun among dinosaur displays while taking in a 3D movie and munching on midnight snacks.

Fantasy in Sand

Lovers of the beach will enjoy a trip down to Arlington anytime between August 1–23 for Fantasy in Sand. At the Globe Life Park, visitors can take in a myriad of large, handcrafted sandcastles that rival even the most detailed artists’ sculptures. Kids that want to dig into the process of sandcastle creation can build their own designs in an on-site sandbox. The event takes place in an air-conditioned, indoor lot, ensuring its status as one of the coolest things to do in Dallas.

The Nature of Genius

Intellectuals can pursue a deconstruction of genius by visiting the Dallas Museum of Art during one of their hosted lectures about popularly recognized visionaries. Professors dissect the minds of Michelangelo, Alfred Hitchcock, and even Frank Sinatra to understand what made these artists and esteemed luminaries produce classic work. All lectures take place on August 8 and run for one hour, but they guarantee to hold lessons that will last a lifetime.

The Vampire Diaries Convention

Fans of the hit shows The Vampire Diaries and The Originals can get their pop culture fix when the official convention for these shows rolls into town on August 14–16. Beloved cast members are scheduled to sit on a panel and answer burning questions from fans. Other events, like a costume competition, a karaoke party, and a live concert bring life to a convention about the undead. It’s sure to be a bloody good time.
