Spring is on the way, which means it’s time to open your NYC home to family and friends after the long winter hibernation. It may not be fun, but it’s time to deep clean your bathroom.

Follow our bathroom cleaning tips and tricks, and you’ll have a spotless space in no time!

Don’t Start Just Yet

Before you start scrubbing, remove any clutter from the room. This alone will have a big impact on your bathroom.

Next, gather gloves, brushes, and cleaners in one spot for easy access. Are you interested in using safer cleaners? Make your own green and thrifty cleaning products.

Finally, ventilate the room by opening doors and windows. Turn on the bathroom fan, too.

Tackle the Toilet

Cleaning the toilet is the most unpleasant part of bathroom cleaning, so why not get it over with first?

Flush the toilet, then apply cleanser generously, starting under the rim. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub with a toilet brush. Flush the toilet, rinsing out the cleaner and toilet brush. Scrub pesky stains with a pumice stone or fill the bowl with a cup of vinegar and let sit overnight.

Next, clean the outside (lid, seat, tank, etc.) with a disinfectant cleaner. Wipe up the cleaner with dry paper towels to avoid spreading germs.

Get the Shower Shiny

No one likes a gross shower, especially your guests! Get it spic and span with our bathroom cleaning tips.

Start by wetting the walls and door, then apply cleanser and let it sit for a few minutes. Scrub surfaces and fixtures well with a stiff scrub brush. Rinse, then buff surfaces dry with a towel.

For dingy grout, mix three parts water and one part bleach. Dip a brush in this solution and scrub. Use pure bleach for tough jobs.

To remove buildup from a shower head, microwave vinegar until warm, then place in a plastic bag. Tie the bag around the shower head and let it sit overnight. Scrub off any remaining deposits, then rinse with water.

Finally, remove the shower curtain and liner. Clean both in your washing machine with warm water and mild detergent. Hang to dry.

Sanitize the Sink

The sink is the dirtiest spot in the bathroom, so focus lots of attention there.

Rinse the sink and fixtures, then apply cleanser. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Rinse again and buff dry.

For slow drains, pour a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar down the drain. After an hour, flush the drain with hot water. This works in your tub, too!

Wipe cabinets clean with a mixture of hot, soapy water. Remove tough hair spray buildup with a cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol.

Wipe Down the Walls

Bathroom walls get dirty fast, so don’t forget them! Clean the walls and art with a microfiber cloth. Then wash them with a mild detergent and water. Dust vents and fans, as well. You’ll also want to remove and clean any curtains.

Finish with the Floors

Tackle the floors last. Start by sweeping or vacuuming the floors and baseboards to remove dust and debris.

To clean your floors, use a combination of hot water and cleanser. You’ll need two buckets: one with water and cleanser and another with just hot water. Start in a corner and work your way toward the door. Dip your mop in the water/cleanser and clean a small section. Rinse the mop in the hot water bucket and repeat.

Apply extra pressure to remove buildup and take your time around the toilet.
