A River Runs through It — Fly Fishing in the Northstate

Fly fishing can be enjoyed by anyone, but the majesty and beauty of Redding and Shasta County can only be enjoyed by those who venture here. Grab your waders and your pole and come and see what you might net.

Fishing is about letting the stress of life melt away. There’s nothing but you, the water, and the steady rhythm of your cast as the fly lands where tall trees shade the water and soft breezes run across the glassy surface of the water.

This is the algorithm of fly fishing; oh, and the hunt — always the hunt to get the fish in the net. Known for its beautiful scenery and some of the most affordable real estate in California, Redding and Shasta County have a plethora of waterways to choose from. The Sacramento River and many lakes are not far from Redding as well as several meandering creeks. One of them is known as Hat Creek; touted as “holy water” to Northern California fly fishing enthusiasts. There is an abundance of flies as well as very selective fish keeping the fishermen on their toes.

Wade Fishing

Wade fishing is all about the hunt and the closeness between you and the water. Becoming one with your prey, slowly fooling the fish into your net, one chess move at a time. Fly fishing is truly a game of wits between you and the fish. Depending on the time of year you may need to move around between casts and occasionally pick up and move to a new location.

Boat Fishing

It is nice to pack a cooler and just cruise in the water and you can even net a few fish, but if you are looking for that ultimate fly fishing experience, the boat may not be your best bet. Change it up by periodically pulling into shore and getting out for some shore fishing, or shallow wade fishing, then get back in the boat for something more laid back. Or contact a fishing guide and get the full experience.

“Match the Hatch”

Know what the fish are looking for by being cognizant of the most recent fly hatch. The local fly shop can keep you in the know. Depending on the time of year and weather, this is one of the fundamentals of fly fishing, to fool that fish into hitting the fly and getting it into your net.

Fly Tying

Fly tying is an art and the artist must be meticulous and a perfectionist. There’s a variety of materials used to create unique flies. Experts have the ability to give the look of reality and flight with their ties, and it is truly a thing of beauty.

Fly fishing can be enjoyed by anyone, but the majesty and beauty of Redding and Shasta County can only be enjoyed by those who venture here. Grab your waders and your pole and come and see what you might net.
