Many people think of Philadelphia as a city of sweatpants, jerseys, and flip-flops, but make no mistake — it’s also home to plenty of fashionistas. Clothing stores in Philadelphia aren’t one-size-fits-all. This neighborhood guide will help you find a store that suits your particular style needs.
Center City
You could start and end your clothes shopping in Center City and be pretty content. This area has something for everyone. Across the street from Rittenhouse Square, at the corner of 18th Street and Walnut Street, sits the flagship store of Anthropologie, the popular women’s clothing and housewares retailer. A few doors down from Anthro, you’ll also find the Philadelphia outpost of Barney’s New York (formerly a Barney’s Co-Op).
Continue east on Walnut Street, and you’ll find a treasure trove of clothing stores in Philadelphia, including Anthropologie’s edgier sibling, Urban Outfitters, at 16th and Walnut Streets. Head north one block, to Chestnut Street, and you’ll reach the Shops at Liberty Place, which boasts such clothing stores such as J.Crew, Loft, and Express. Chestnut Street is also home to local favorite Knit Wit, which offers a wide selection of designer clothing, and made-to-order menswear store Commonwealth Proper.
Old City
Old City is more than just a collection of historical sites. It’s also a great shopping destination. If you’re hunting for something to wear that won’t be available at every mall across the country, this is the neighborhood for you. For a unique ensemble, hit up Smak Parlour on Market Street, just a few steps from the 2nd Street stop on the Market-Frankford Line. This women’s clothing store offers cute dresses, tops, and bottoms from lesser-known brands, as well as clothing that’s sewn in the store itself.
Another boutique to check out is Sugarcube, on 3rd Street, which offers clothing with a vintage feel for men and women. If you need a new pair of jeans or want to find out what premium denim is all about, head to Charlie’s Jeans on Market Street, a stone’s throw from Smak Parlour. The store offers custom fitting sessions, so you can finally find the pair of jeans that’s right for you.
If you prefer gently used clothes from decades past, Old City also has options for you — most notably Sazz Vintage and Briar Vintage, sister stores that sit right next to each other on 3rd Street. With both stores dedicated to unique vintage finds for men, Sazz sells retro threads “from rockabilly to disco, ” while Briar specializes in even older pieces, with some dating back as far as the 1800s. You can find a small selection of women’s clothing at Sazz, too.
South Philly
South Philly is home to a number of great vintage stores, as well as a great clothing boutique for men. Located across from the Singing Fountain on East Passyunk Avenue, Metro Men’s Clothing has been voted the city’s best men’s clothing store. It carries a range of higher-end casual clothing brands, including G-Star, Lacoste, and Ben Sherman.
Metro Men’s clothing is currently located in the store that used to house 1600 Below Vintage, which has moved up to 6th and Bainbridge Street. 1600 Below offers moderately priced retro dresses, fur coats, and underthings, as well as a great selection of costume jewelry.
Whether you want clothes made in this decade or years past, whether you’re looking for hard-to-find designers or more mainstream labels, Philadelphia clothing stores have it all. In Philly, you’ll never have to open your closet and wonder what to wear again.
