Last summer, much of the country came together by the “Ice-Bucket Challenge” which brought unprecedented awareness to ALS – a disease of which most people were previously naive and only associated with baseball legend Lou Gehrig.
But some are all too familiar with the progressive neuro-degenerative disease. Twin sons Matt and Dan have lived their entire lives in their Farmingville, NY home with mom Terry. Shortly after they graduated from college, their world completely changed when their mother was diagnosed ALS. One of the most difficult parts of living with this disease is its degenerative nature. Over time, Terry began to slowly become more dependent on others to perform day to day activities. Additionally, it became more apparent that their home was ill-equipped to support Terry in all of her needs. She eventually was unable to access the power stair-lift to go upstairs to utilize the bathroom her sons had previously renovated for her.
The boys knew that their mother needed something specifically tailored to Terry’s lifestyle which offered her comfort, privacy and accessibility, so Matt and Dan wrote to George Oliphant of George to the Rescue for some help. For a woman who spent her entire life giving back to her family and community at large, writing to George was the least they could do to return the favor. And the end result is more that any of the Sherwood family could have imagined.
The Sherwoods believe that whether you’re in a one bedroom ranch or a mansion, when you’re with your loved ones, it’s Home Sweet Home. The brightest part of the twins’ day is seeing their mother smile. Every son or daughter should put themselves in the shoes of the Sherwoods and ask themselves if they could keep the same positive attitude everyday in light of seeing their mother battle ALS. It is a true testament to the power of family and how home can bring everyone closer.
