Attend an Outdoor Event or Festival

Make the most of May’s gorgeous weather! It’s the perfect time to attend an outdoor event or festival.

Neighborhood street fairs are beginning to pop up everywhere. Grab a bite to eat and a bauble to wear!

On Saturday, May 16, shake a leg at the Dance Parade and Festival! The parade, which showcases 75 styles of dance, begins at 21st Street and shimmies its way through the city, ending in Tompkins Square Park.

Walk the 30th Annual AIDS Walk and make a difference in your community. Held on May 17, the walk is the largest single-day AIDS fundraising event in the world. Money raised supports prevention, care, and advocacy programs for the thousands of men, women, and families affected by the disease in the tri-state area.

From music to museums, May in New York is a great time to experience a little culture.

Are you a jazz fan? Don’t miss the Harlem Jazz Shrines, running from May 4 to 9. The annual event celebrates the classic clubs and venues that turned Harlem into the Jazz Mecca. Although the festivals pays tribute to the past, you’ll enjoy performances from today’s top talent.

Head to Randall’s Island for the Frieze Art Fair, May 14–17, where you can see and buy art from over 1,000 of the world’s leading artists. Make sure to take in the great city views while you’re there.

Before it ends on May 25, stop by the American Museum of Natural History to see The Butterfly Conservatory. Mingle with 500 live, free-flying tropical butterflies from around the world in this exhibit. It’s a hit with adults and kids alike!

Stop by the MOMA to see the highly anticipated Yoko Ono exhibit at MOMA (opens May 17), which brings together 125 of her early objects, works on paper, installations, performances, audio recordings, and films, alongside rarely seen archival materials. While you’re there, check out the Björk retrospective.

Don’t forget about the theater! Shakespeare in the Park opens May 27 and features Sam Waterston in The Tempest.

Plan the Ultimate Memorial Day Weekend

Head to the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum for a number of holiday events, including a Memorial Day Ceremony honoring the fallen men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. The ceremony brings together hundreds of veterans, representing wars and conflicts from WWII to the present, along with their families. It’s free and open to the public.

Venture uptown for the New York Philharmonic’s free Memorial Day concert at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Tickets are first come, first served on the day of the performance, so arrive early.

Fleet Week is May 20–26. Catch concerts, tour ships, and meet Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen as they tour NYC!
