When you start to feel the heat, it means it’s time for a fun summer in NYC. Yes, it’s known for its grand holiday-season panache, but the Big Apple is also the place to be for its own unique summer fun. Take a step outside your city abode to visit one of NYC’s amazing parks or zoos. Enjoy a splash in a pool and take advantage of the many free outside live performances, festivals, and movies.

A Walk on the Wild Side

Only in this wonderful city can someone have the choice of visiting five different zoos and an aquarium. Summer is the perfect time to check out the wild fun. Right in the center of Manhattan, within scenic Central Park, is the Central Park Zoo, which is known for its lively sea lions ready to greet visitors with their happy barks. NYC’s Bronx Zoo is a wonderful place to play with its many exhibits and habitats, including the African Plains and Madagascar. Trendy Brooklyn plays host to the Prospect Park Wildlife Center, and Queens is home to the fun Queens Zoo situated within Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Do not forget to visit the sea mammals and sea life that make the Coney Island Aquarium home. Enjoy a yearly membership to get free admission to the four zoos and aquarium hosted by the Wildlife Conservation Society, and also take the ferry to Staten Island for a day of fun at the Staten Island Zoo. Lions, tigers, bears, and even sharks always makes summer in NYC a wild adventure.

Dive into Summer Fun

Sitting next to skyscrapers on the Hudson River side of NYC is Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment Complex. This amazing playground is the perfect place to play host to a summer of fun. With sports centers, camps, and programs, there is always a bustle of summer-style activity to enjoy. Summertime means pools and sunning — the Chelsea Piers pool is the perfect indoor escape from the hot city. Take a swim NYC-style while enjoying views of the Hudson River and then relax on a lounge chair on the deck to catch some rays. It may not be the beach but Chelsea Piers does have sand to enjoy a game of volleyball. With the only indoor sand volleyball court in New York City, you can even enjoy a day of summer fun diving to save the ball for your team when the weather is not so sunny.

Shakespeare in New York Style

Home to magnificent Broadway productions and museums, New York City is well known as the center of world culture and theater. In true NYC-style the Big Apple plays host to the Public Theater’s annual season of Free Shakespeare in the Park every summer. At the Delacorte Theater in lovely Central Park, city dwellers have the amazing opportunity to view free outdoor performances of Shakespeare plays with well-known and highly respected actors. This is a greatly relished and anticipated event. The plays are free for those with tickets. Free tickets are available at the Central Park Delacorte Theater free ticket lines, as well as through the Astor Place distribution lottery, locations in the five boroughs, and through the virtual ticketing lottery on the website.
