Fall has arrived and so have cooler temperatures. There’s nothing better after a chilly New York day than relaxing in a cozy bedroom.
Here are five ways to create the perfect sanctuary in your NYC home.
Get Rid of Clutter
It’s impossible to relax when disorder surrounds you. Spend some time decluttering your bedroom. Remove anything that doesn’t belong, like work files or old magazines. Then put away your clothes and clean off every surface. Baskets, decorative boxes, and trays are an attractive way to contain wayward items.

Materials Matter
When it comes to creating a cozy bedroom, selecting the right fabrics and materials is key. Indulge in sheets with a high thread count (200 to 400). These sheets are tightly woven, more durable, and feel softer. You skin will thank you! Choose flannel sheets if your bedroom is especially cold.
For added comfort, select a down (or down alternative) comforter and pillows. These materials feel light but will wrap you in warmth as you drift off to sleep.
If you don’t already have a headboard, consider investing in one that’s padded or tufted. You’ll appreciate the added cushioning when reading in bed.
Maximize the Light
Lighting is very important in a bedroom. Curtains, shades, or blinds let in light during the day, while keeping out street light at night. It’s worth spending extra money on these items, because they impact the quality of your sleep.
If your room has overhead lighting, install a dimmer switch. You’ll be able to adjust the light throughout the day depending on your needs.
Do you have space for a bedside table? Add an attractive lamp so you don’t have to jump out of bed to turn off the overhead light. Choose sconces if space is an issue.

Choose the Right Colors
Color is another important consideration when creating a cozy bedroom. Neutral hues in shades of white or gray are always a great choice. If you’d like to add more color, try blue. It’s cool and soothing and available in a range of shades from pale baby blue to deep navy. Green is another excellent option.
Stay away from vibrant colors like red, which is stimulating and may make it hard to sleep. If you must have red, use it as an accent rather than all over color.
Add a Relaxing Accent
A comfortable finishing touch is the last step in creating a cozy bedroom. Place a cushy rug under your bed. It will keep your feet warm and cushioned in the morning.
If you have space, add a cushioned chair in a corner and a nightstand next to your bed. Add a lamp, relaxing scented candles (try lavender, sandalwood, or mandarin), and your favorite books.
Finally, don’t forget your toes! Keep them warm by placing a luxurious throw at the foot of the bed.
