Key Largo is a special place. It’s seemingly impossible to be bored here, as this Upper Keys island has so much to offer. Even though the community is welcoming, it can still be nerve-wracking to move to a new environment, and it can take a while to learn about the local way of life.
Here are a few things you need to know when moving to Key Largo.
The atmosphere is laid-back but still exciting. The Florida Keys as a whole is well known for its laid-back atmosphere, but because of Key Largo’s proximity to Miami and the fact that it’s the first stop in the Keys means that it’s a popular destination for people to visit. Moving to Key Largo means that you’ll get the chance to meet so many new people with different backgrounds and get to share your experiences as well. It’s the perfect amount of relaxing with a little bit of hustle and bustle from the tourism industry.
We measure things in mile markers. Instead of addresses, sometimes you’ll hear people refer to places by their mile marker (MM). For example, the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce is located at MM 106. After you live here a while, you’ll be able to tell exactly where a destination is and what it’s located next to solely based on its mile marker.
The Upper Keys is comprised of Key Largo and Islamorada. If you live in Key Largo, you’re going to hear a lot about Islamorada. It’s the neighboring town, and you’ll probably spend a decent amount of time there. It’s a good place to go for restaurants, the arts, and other entertainment options, and it’s a town you’ll get to know well the longer you stay in Key Largo.
It’s busy during certain times of the year. The popularity of the area depends on what time of the year it is. During peak travel times, it might be a little more crowded than it is during the slower months of the year. It’s great for those who do enjoy a lively lifestyle but who also who like a quiet community sometimes.
The water is the biggest source of entertainment. There is a lot to do in Key Largo, but a lot of the activities are water-based. Kayaking, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, swimming, and spending time watching the sun set over the ocean are just a few favorites of tourists and residents alike. If you love spending time in and near the water, you’ll never run out of things to do here.
There is a lot of variety in the housing and neighborhoods. In Key Largo, you can find mansions, condos, apartments, cottages, traditional housing, and any other housing options you can imagine. It’s a vibrant community, and you’ll be able to find the right neighborhood for you based on your preferences.
The Upper Keys is such a wonderful area to live in, and if you’re moving to Key Largo from another place, you’ll adjust quickly. It’s like being on vacation, except you get to stay as long as you want.

We don’t watch the sunset over the ocean, bayside only. You will never see that sun setting in the east.
