Yesterday, we announced the first ever Coldwell Banker #HomeRocks Awards where we are highlighting the best songs about home over the course of the last year. Today kicks off the first of a series of posts where we take a closer look at each of the nominees.
Our first nominee is the laid back and catchy tune On the Way Home by John Mayer.
The song deals with the subject of when the times has come for you to go home. While I don’t know what was exactly in John Mayer’s mind when he penned the lyrics, it appears to me that he’s writing this about the end of a summer vacation and now it’s time to go home.
There’s a bit of sadness in the words as if there’s a disappointment that he has to go, but there’s a hint of joy in it too, as odd as that may seem. As someone who’s spent summers at the Jersey shore, I can relate to being disappointed about having to go home and leave the fun and friends behind. But what On the Way Home conveys is that the memories and friends made don’t end with saying goodbye. They are taken with you and help shape your own home.
It’s fitting that this song is the last one on Mayer’s album Paradise Valley. Shouldn’t being “on the way home” be the perfect ending to pretty much anything?
