A Letter to my Future Home

Here's to all those who dream of owning their own home one day.

Whoa — things are getting a little bit personal on the blog today. We’d like to think our Blue Matter readers are made up of “home dwellers & dreamers” – and I’m one of the dreamers. For some reason, I’ve personified the idea of my future home, so I felt it was only appropriate to reach out and introduce myself in the letter below.

Dear Future Home,

We haven’t yet been acquainted, but I thought it would be a good idea to tell you a little bit about us.

My husband and I have been waiting to meet you for what feels like forever. We currently live in a small, cozy second floor apartment, and while it has treated us so well, we know we have so much to look forward to knowing you’ll be all ours.

I don’t have a clear picture of you in my mind, but I know you’re filled with sunlight. You have windows abound, a beautiful backyard, and cozy brick walls. You’re not too big that you overwhelm us, but you’re also not small enough where we feel cramped for space. Your insides swirl with fresh air when the windows are open and you keep us safe, cozy, and protected.

I think you’ll love us just as much as we’ll love you. We like to have a good time, so you’ll always be filled with laughter, silly voices, and loud music. I have a signature dance move that comes out any time I’m really happy (or have had a few glasses of wine) – you’ll know it when you see it. Trust me. You’ll hear my husband playing the piano or guitar every night – it’s how he winds down after a long day at work.

A few weeks ago I probably would have told you I wouldn’t be spending much time in your kitchen, but as it turns out, I’m starting to embrace the idea of cooking and am actually beginning to enjoy it. I can’t promise my food will be worthy of placement on any 5-star restaurant menus, but as long as it tastes and smells good, you can expect to see lots of it around. Tuesdays are taco nights, in case you want to write that down.

You’ll get to know and love our friends and family, and will be seeing lots of them. Nothing makes us happier than sharing our space with the ones we love. When they’re around, the noise level is turned all the way up (apologies in advance) – but so is the fun.

We’re not loud all the time, though. We enjoy and embrace moments of quiet and serenity as often as we can. On weekend mornings, we’ll stay in bed long enough to watch the rays of sun peek through the shutters and dance on the walls. We’ll set the coffee maker timer the night before, so you, too, can wake up to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee.

It’s just the two of us right now, but we’re hoping to add a four legged friend to the family as soon as possible. I apologize in advance for him or her scuffing up your floors or chewing on your banisters, but I can guarantee our future pup will bring enough happiness and joy to outweigh any of that other stuff.

We haven’t decided for sure, but one day we may decide to bring a kid into the world. You’ll hear your stairs become a little creakier as I carry this extra person along with me, and shortly thereafter, the pitter-patter of tiny feet taking their first steps on your floors.

As often as we can, we’ll leave you to go explore the world. We have places to discover, people to meet, and experiences to have – but it doesn’t mean we don’t love you. We’ll always be back, because you’ll be Home — and you are ultimately where we belong.

Can’t wait to meet you,
Alexandra

  1. Is it weird, I’m singing “Dear future house” to the tune of “Dear future husband?” while I read this post? I love this post so much. It’s all so true … you want “your feels” to match the space.
