If you live in a small NYC apartment, it may be difficult to figure out where to store your cold weather items come spring. Here are some storage tips for your winter accessories so that you can get ready for the warmer weather to come.

As spring approaches, the time comes to stow away your winter necessities and pull out your sandals, white jeans, and light jackets. If you live in a small NYC apartment, it may be difficult to figure out where to store your cold weather items. Here are some storage tips for your winter accessories to you get ready for spring and the warmer weather to come.

Underbed Boxes

In a small space, underbed boxes are your friend. You can find rigid or flexible cloth underbed storage boxes at places like The Container Store or Amazon. These boxes can be quite large and hold a lot of things, such as sweaters, jeans, and even shoes or blankets. Of course, in the winter, these can also hold warm-weather items. This is a great strategy because it keeps the off-season items out of sight and out of mind, making it easier for your closet to stay organized with only seasonally appropriate clothing and accessories. You can also buy smaller underbed boxes that are perfect for holding boots, and usually you can fit two pairs of boots into one.

Garment Bags

Another strategy for stowing away winter items is to purchase a large garment bag for your closet. This is a perfect solution for zipping away bulky winter coats. Again, out of sight, out of mind. On the bottom of the bag, you can stack folded sweaters, thus getting even more storage mileage out of the garment bag. This way your puffy coats are hidden away, and while they still take up physical real estate in your closet, they will not take up visual space. Opt for a natural fiber like breathable cotton rather than plastic, as this will be better for your clothing.

Cedar Blocks and Cedar Balls

When it comes to storage tips, it is important to remember to protect your items while they are in storage. Cedar balls and blocks are moth deterrents, and they lack the unpleasant mothball scent. Place the blocks into your garment bag or underbed boxes, or tuck them between sweaters to ward off pests that will put holes into your woolen items. Also be sure to launder and dry clean everything before you store it away!

Baskets

Baskets can also provide great storage in a small space. They hold a lot and also look attractive, so it’s a perfect solution for stowing away items that you don’t want on display. Baskets are especially perfect for something like blankets, which you may want to pull out on a chilly spring night. They also work wonderfully for off-season handbags, gloves, scarves, and even shoes.
