Home Sweet Weekend Home: Make Your Weekend Getaway Dreams a Reality

We all need a getaway once in a while. My family dreamed about a weekend getaway for years, and we finally made the dream come true when we built our getaway home in the mountains near Las Vegas. And you can make your getaway dreams a reality too!

When we want something in our lives, we can envision it, we can taste it, and only we can understand why we want it. For years, my husband and I dreamed of building a small weekend getaway in the mountains. We talked about it yearly and always kept that goal in mind. We’d say, “Once the kids grow up, or once the kids get married, we’ll find a getaway.” We kept the goal alive for decades — and that goal never died.

We set out to make that dream a reality, and seven years ago, our mountain getaway in Mount Charleston, Nevada, was born. Although not always easy, we enjoyed the process of building our cabin with the help of our family and friends. We stayed committed to finding and building our weekend getaway destination. It has become a place of delight where we call home 2 days a week.

Our mountain cabin is unlike anything Las Vegas has to offer. Our weekend home affords us down time, the most precious commodity. Our modest cabin is “off the grid,” so that means no cell phone, telephone, television, or Internet. We can truly slow down and enjoy the simple things that nature has to offer — like birds, chipmunks, squirrels, deer, and wild turkeys, just to name a few. The surrounding forest of green trees and bright blue skies are so very soothing to the eye and the soul. I get time to read a book, write a letter, or just talk to my husband without interruption. And the best part is that in the summer, we enjoy temperatures 20 degrees cooler than the city of Las Vegas, and in the winter, we even get a touch of snow! It’s really the best of both city living and country weekends.

On the weekends that we have family and friends joining us, the time we spend together is so cherished because the mountain environment allows us to focus on each other, with no distractions. My grandchildren get to explore the outdoors and experience hiking, s’more-making, and the sound of birds waking them up in the morning.

I feel so blessed to be able to accomplish our vision of what was, and still is, very important to us. We stayed focused and accomplish our dream. I hope everyone has a vision for their future and can enjoy some downtime where ever they can find it.

So pack up and find or build your weekend getaway home, too!
