A mantelpiece can really add something special to a room. It’s a decorative shelf often found in older Philadelphia homes with fireplaces. The original purpose of a mantel was to stop smoke from rising up to the ceiling. Now they are used mostly for decoration. If you have a mantel in your living room or bedroom, here are some spring-themed mantel decorations that will help liven it up for the season.
Flower Time
One of the best reminders that spring has sprung is seeing a fresh bouquet of flowers on your mantel. Not only does it add visual appeal, it also adds a fragrant smell to the room that will awaken your senses every morning. To decorate your mantel with flowers, purchase two beautiful vases in yellow, light blue, light green, or a similar pastel color and fill it with fresh seasonal flowers from your local flower shop or garden center. Wild lilies and tulips are popular on the East Coast in the springtime. Also, look for sunflowers to use as the central element for your bouquets.
Decorative Mirror
You can also use a beautiful mirror to cheer up your mantel. This is a chance to use your crafting skills to create a unique spring-themed design. Here are some ideas to get your creative juices going:
- Purchase white lace trim or lattice to line the edges of the mirror to put you in the mind of “spring in the country.”
- Get pastel-colored stickers, magnets, or decorative rhinestones and use them to create a design at the center of the mirror.
- Create bird, bee, and leaf-shaped patterns from cloth and use them to decorate the front.
Remember that this mirror isn’t for looking at your reflection (it will probably be too high on the mantelpiece to see anyway) — it’s for decoration, so don’t be afraid to be as artistic as you’d like.
Spring-Themed Art
A number of great Philadelphia art shows come to the area in the spring that feature an array of local and national artists. You can also find interesting artwork at local cafes and coffee shops in Center City as well as the suburbs. Keep your eyes peeled for spring-themed art that would look interesting hanging over your mantel. If you really want something special, hire a local Philly artist to come paint a unique mural above your mantel.
Your Special Touch
If you really want to kick your spring mantel decorations up a notch, especially if you’re planning to have company over, you can combine two or more of these ideas to create a really elaborate presentation. When you add your very own special touch to the mantel, you’re sure to get plenty of compliments about your creation from friends — and don’t forget to take plenty of great pictures for Pinterest!
