Holiday Cheer, Festive Air, Season’s Greetings – no, it’s not Christmas yet – it is another holiday – Diwali (or Deepavali) – the Festival of Lights celebrated by millions of Indians.

Growing up in India, this time of the year was special for me. It was in the air, all around me. Everyone was in the holiday spirit. Stores were all decked up, lots of gift-shopping, homes being cleaned and decorated! Stressful as it was, I was always filled with a sense of warmth and joy. It was a time of celebration – for all the things I have in my life, family and relationships, my Home! The kitchen became the warmest place (pun intended) in the weeks leading up to Diwali. My mom would churn out these delicious treats – sweet and savory…Mmmm, I can taste it even today.

Half way across the world and many years later, I am feeling the warmth in my own kitchen as I prepare to celebrate Diwali this weekend. Notwithstanding the fact that my efforts last night were disastrous (and I am going to try and fix that tonight!), I am keeping traditions alive.

My home will light up this weekend with Diyas (earthen lamps) and my front porch will have Rangoli, as will millions of people across the world. I will welcome happiness and prosperity into my home and pray that it sustains through the New Year. I will celebrate with family and friends with lots of food and gifts. No other time of the year says home, family, and tradition to me more than this holiday. Sound familiar?
