Last week we featured a post about the 10 ten real estate bargains for retirees, which are all desirable areas for people of any age. As I mentioned before, my love for Ben & Jerry’s has me leaning toward Vermont as my favorite retirement destination on this list, so we connected with Leslee MacKenzie, the president and owner of Coldwell Banker Hickok & Boardman Realty in Burlington, VT, to uncover what else makes this town so special.
According to Leslee, Vermont and particularly the Greater Burlington area have long been recognized as a great community to raise a family and to retire. “The scenic beauty of Burlington’s location on Lake Champlain overlooking New York’s Adirondack Mountains and the endless cultural activities, recreational experiences, and manageable population size all contribute to a quality of life attractive to families and retirees alike,” she said. We find many people moving here already have a connection to the area and often are relocating to live closer to their grandchildren.”
Leslee also noted that the universities and colleges contribute to the vibrancy and sophistication not often seen in a market with a population of less than 160,000 people, and that the business community has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, meaning retirees can stay active at their own pace. In addition, the area provides a variety of residential options from historic homes to new construction; single family homes in established neighborhoods to condominiums with breathtaking views – all within a short distance to the town center, amenities, and recreational opportunities.
I have friends that live in Burlington and I’ve been up there to visit a number of times. From everything I’ve seen I agree wholeheartedly with Leslee that it’s a great place to not only visit, but live and retire.
