Everyone wants to win yard of the month. It’s a source of pride. All that work getting your yard in first-class shape has finally paid off. And now you have a sign to stick in your grass for all to see. The question is: how do you get there? Here’s a checklist to make your yard the best-looking yard in your DFW neighborhood.
Consider Your Home’s Curb Appeal
Make sure the driveway and sidewalks are neatly edged. Yes, it takes some time to do the job well, but a carefully edged lawn looks well-maintained and appealing.
Don’t cut your grass too short. In North Texas, it can be tempting to mow your grass low so you can extend the time between your next mowing. But if you’re going for that coveted yard of the month recognition, keep your lawn lush and green.
Get rid of all trash and clutter. This means keeping your garbage bins out of view and making sure all your kids’ toys and bicycles are properly stored. There’s nothing like some unnecessary clutter to damage the beauty of your yard.
Pay Attention to Trees and Shrubs
Grooming matters. If grass is growing around the base of the trees in your yard, keep it trimmed properly with a weed-eater. If you have mulch under your trees, keep the area free of weeds. And no matter what time of year, fallen leaves and acorns should be completely cleared away.
Snip your shrubs well. Whether you like flat-top shapes or elegant topiaries, for your home to be in the running for yard of the month, your shrubs need to be kept neat and well-groomed.
Focus on Flowers
Your seasonal plants should be thriving with healthy, lush blooms. You should also take note to remove any dying flower heads or dead leaves along with any unsightly weeds. Here are some useful tips from the Dallas County Master Gardener Association on what to do in your yard and landscape each month.
Make your flowers work for you by planting them in attractive layouts. Taller plants should be placed in the back of a square or long flower bed, and smaller plants should be brought to the front. Or, if you have a free-standing flowerbed, place tall plants in the middle and work outward with smaller plants. Follow these simple gardening tips for Dallas yards.
Yard of the month can be yours if you take the time to carefully and meticulously make your yard the best it can be. Are you a regular winner in your neighborhood? Share your tips below.
