When living in an apartment, condo, or townhouse, it’s not uncommon to share spaces with your neighbors – including laundry rooms, backyards, courtyards, and gyms – just to name a few! As a city dweller, I’ve picked up a few tips along the way on shared space etiquette which ensures a positive living experience — and happy neighbors!
Communicate, communicate, communicate!
This is the key to any good relationship as far as I’m concerned, but it’s especially important to practice good communication skills when you & your neighbors live in close quarters. Planning on inviting friends over for a backyard party? Instead of surprising your neighbors with a crowds and loud music, see if your building has a sign-up sheet to reserve your spot. If you live in a smaller complex, send an email out letting everyone know your plans. It’s also helpful to include your cell phone number so they can text you if the party gets too loud or becomes disruptive. Tip: you’ll get bonus points if you’re nice enough to extend an invite!
Don’t be “that guy” or girl
What do I mean by that? Clean up after yourself & your guests! Nothing is worse than heading out to enjoy a shared space and finding a mess. By doing your part to keep things clean and organized, you’ll maintain the quality of that shared space. You’ll also be setting the standard for your neighbors so that everyone will understand and appreciate what is expected.
