After finding this listing on coldwellbanker.com, all I could say was Dome Sweet Dome. Ok sick of the cheesy puns? Sorry I couldn’t help myself! But seriously, this house is truly unlike any I have ever seen.
Not only is this home beautiful but it is also very interesting. Here are some fun facts I learned from listing agent Amber Miller:
It is Customer Built (No shock, right?)
The house is a custom built and designed Geodesic Dome. It was almost entirely built – start to finish – by the current homeowner and her first husband, Bill. They built the house 1983 – cutting wooden beams, creating metal fasteners, welding everything themselves. You can see pictures and learn about the process here Dome Home Story
It is Energy Efficient
Geodesic domes are inherently energy efficient but this one is especially so because it is insulated with over 7″ of Dow Styrofoam and Fiberglas insulation and includes argon filled, ultra low solar heat gain coefficient windows and patio doors. Additional 1000′ of water pipe is embedded in the basement floor for potential hook up to natural heat source.
An imported cast iron, wood burning stove cloaked with ceramic tile (known as a Kachelofen) distributes heat evenly throughout the dome.
It is a Dream Home for Dog Lovers
Flip, the homeowner, had a hobby kennel breeding and showing large breed dogs so there is a 5 unit indoor/outdoor kennel in an 30′ x 50′ out building that is partially heated and air conditioned. In addition to this home having an unbelievable kennel, it sits on 6.51 mostly wooded acres. Imagine the nature hikes you and your four-legged friend could take?
