The holidays are all about traditions and spending time with family and friends. The Greater Lansing area offers many special holiday activities for all ages that give you a great opportunity to create special memories with the people you love. Here is a rundown of some Greater Lansing “must-do” holiday activities.
Silver Bells in the City
In Downtown Lansing, the holiday season traditionally kicks off with the annual Silver Bells in the City. This year, Silver Bells takes place on Friday, November 17, 2017. Silver Bells includes an electric light parade, a holiday market where you can jump start your shopping, and the lighting of the State Tree in front of the Capitol Building. Other Silver Bells activities include a 5K run, brunch with Santa, a concert, and fireworks. You’ll want to bundle up and arrive early to grab a great spot along Capitol Avenue to view the parade.
The MSU Craft Fair
This annual Holiday Arts and Crafts show is one of the largest of its kind in the state. It takes over the Union on the campus of Michigan State University December 2–3, 2017. If you appreciate unique, handmade items, this is the place to be. From personalized ornaments to unique clothing items, there is literally something for everyone at this event. It’s also a great opportunity to check out the beautiful MSU Campus or visit some of the restaurants and specialty stores in downtown East Lansing.
Potter Park Wonderland of Lights
If you love visiting the zoo, this event is a must! From November 17 through December 31, 2017 Potter Park Zoo turns into a wonderland of lights. This event runs Thursdays through Sundays, and it’s a really fun, festive way to see the zoo. Potter Park also holds an adult event on December 6th called Winter Wine, Stein & Spirits. This 21+ event features beverages, hors d’oeuvres, and live music while you stroll through the festively lit zoo.
Peacock Road Family Farm
Once you visit the Peacock Road Family Farm, you’ll want to add it to your list of annual holiday traditions. This magical place, located in Laingsburg, is a holiday must and a great place to purchase a Christmas tree. The farm offers pre-cut trees or you can cut down your own. Kids will have an awesome time visiting Santa (one of the best in the area); there is a great gift collection in the holiday shop; and you can enjoy creamy hot chocolate and desserts in the sugar shack.
The Nutcracker Ballet
If you love the ballet, nothing is more festive than attending an annual production of The Nutcracker. In Greater Lansing, the Capital Ballet Theatre will perform this holiday classic on Thanksgiving weekend, November 24–26. The production takes place at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts on the MSU Campus.
Whether you want to start a new holiday tradition or enjoy something that you’ve tried in years past, there are lots of holiday activities to enjoy throughout the Greater Lansing area!
