Continuing in our series of posts highlighting songs nominated for the first ever Coldwell Banker #HomeRocks Awards brings us to Home Again by Sir Elton John.

With his recent release, Home Again, from his critically acclaimed new album The Diving Board, Elton still manages to gift us with a fresh sounding and beautiful song about the significance of home. We spend our young lives trying to leave our parents’ homes, embarking on journeys that take us different places. But when all is said and done, even a glamorous star longs for the comfort of returning to that special place called home.

The following quote from Elton John summarizes the essence of this song: “When you are away from home a long time and you are having a great time, sooner or later the call comes to you…There’s a feeling of gratitude and there’s a wonderful sense of peace and calm and relief.”

As the lyrics so poignantly state, “We all dream of leaving, but wind up in the end spending all our time trying to get back home again.” The haunting and somewhat familiar piano chords paint the imagery behind the ache in Elton’s voice as he sings about the pain and joy of life’s course.

As a musician myself, I am especially vulnerable to these feelings. Leaning back in my comfy chair listening intently, I am grateful to be home.
