Every April, Fair Housing Month serves as an important reminder: Access to housing should never be limited by discrimination. It should be shaped by opportunity, choice and equality. While the Fair Housing Act was signed into law more than 50 years ago, its mission remains relevant today.
At the Coldwell Banker® brand, we believe homeownership can be life changing. It offers stability, pride and a pathway to long-term financial security. That’s why we continue to support fair housing practices and inclusive communities – because everyone deserves the chance to find a place to call home.
A Landmark Law With a Lasting Impact
The Fair Housing Act was enacted in 1968, prohibiting discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion and national origin. Congress later expanded the law to include sex (1974) and, in 1988, disability and familial status (families with children). These were defining moments in the fight for civil rights – the Act reinforced an essential truth: Fair housing is not simply a legal standard. It is a reflection of the kind of communities we want to build.
Why Fair Housing Still Matters
Equitable home access is about more than protecting individual rights. It strengthens neighborhoods. It supports economic mobility. It opens the door to better education, stronger infrastructure and long-term prosperity. When communities are inclusive, they are more resilient and more successful. Progress has been made over the years, but barriers to housing access still exist. Discrimination may look different today than it did decades ago, but its effects can still impact where people live, what opportunities they have and how communities grow.
A Shared Responsibility in Real Estate
Housing equity is especially meaningful within the real estate industry because agents and brokers play a direct role in ensuring that every client is treated with professionalism and respect. By following the law, we build trust, protect equal opportunity and help create a housing market that benefits us all, together.
This month is a chance to reflect, learn and recommit – in an ongoing effort that matters every day.
