“Sleep all you can now because you are going to need it” This is HANDS DOWN the #1 piece of advice I was given from other parents before my son was born and I now understand just how important their recommendation was.
sleep /slēp/ noun
- a condition of body and mind such as that which typically recurs for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is relatively inactive, the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed, and consciousness practically suspended.
This may be the definition of sleep before you have a baby but the thought of several hours with your eyes closed is pretty much unheard of for the first few months after you bring your little one home.
For those of you who are rolling your eyes saying oh my little one slept like an angel from the very first night we brought them home then please just move along. For those who agree that the sleep struggle is real come a little closer because I found the mecca of sleep solutions at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show! This company’s tagline of “exhaustion is optional” reeled me right in and I am so glad I had a chance to check out their product. It is called SNOO and it comes from Dr. Carp who is the genius who wrote the bestselling book “The Happiest Baby on the Block.” Take a look…
For my son, we found a combo of swaddling, shushing and rocking was all he really needed to fall asleep but once we actually placed him in his crib he would often wake right up. The SNOO smart sleeper® does all of the above right in the bassinet and looks good doing it!
It reduces crying, boosts a baby’s sleep and is being touted as the safest baby bed ever made. From a built in white notion machine that mimics a parent’s shush to motion that gently rocks a baby to sleep the SNOO is like having a built in night nurse for just $7 a night. It is perfect for a newborn all the way up to 6 months and even has a built in swaddle.
For me, it doesn’t remove the need to check on a baby when they are crying (this should be obvious) but it does help to settle them for those times when they don’t need to be picked up.
